Curcumin, Bioperine and Breast Cancer – New Research

A recent study on breast cancer research and treatment links certain compounds found in spices to a reduction in cancerous cells in breast tissue. The study suggests that specific dietary compounds, Curcumin and piperine, may promote healthy breast tissue. Researchers have found that Curcumin (found in turmeric) and piperine (found in black pepper), decreased the number of cancerous stem cells while non-cancerous stem cells were unaffected.

This research used amounts of Curcumin and piperine that were approximately 20 times greater than what you could consume from food, but these amounts are commonly available in dietary supplements.

Diets rich in Polyphenols and Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids May Protect Brain Cells

According to a new Spanish study at Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona, a diet high in polyphenol antioxidants and polyunsaturated fatty acids can help cell growth in the areas of the brain that Alzheimer’s disease damages. These nutrients may delay onset of disease and slow its evolution. In an animal study, this diet was capable of inducing new cell growth in the adult brain and may strengthen the neural networks which become affected by age and disease such as Alzheimer’s. This diet also protected neurons from oxidative damage, which is associated with many diseases affecting the central nervous system.

Low vitamin D again linked to higher mortality.

Numerous studies have shown that lower levels of vitamin D can be associated with the increased occurrences of health issues and premature mortality in the elderly. A new study published in Clinical Endocrinology (November 2009), followed the vitamin D levels of 614 men and women, average age of 70 years, over a period of 6 years. Those exhibiting the lowest blood levels of vitamin D were found to have 2-4 times the increased risk for all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality. This report helps to support the need for vitamin D supplementation with regards to reducing mortality and cardiovascular risks.

Interesting statistics on aging!

The September 2009 issue of Functional Ingredients (a trade magazine for the nutraceutical industry) included an intriguing article on the relationship between healthy aging, quality of life and dietary supplements. It included a number of staggering statistics on aging persons and I wanted to share some of them with you:
  • 1/3 of people over the age of 65 fall down each year. One in five require medical attention and one in 10 break a bone
  • Falls are responsible for the deaths of more than 20,000 people in the US each year
  • Nearly 40% of fatal falls involve people older than 85 years
  • By age 60, four in 10 men and half of all women report joint pain in one or more joints
  • For the US population as a whole, 50 million suffer from arthritis
  • Peak bone density is reached at age 35. By age 80, women will have half the calcium in their bones that they did at half that age
  • Dementia affects about five percent of people ages 70-80, 24% of people ages 80-90 and more than 40% of people older than 90
  • Dementia is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States

While these are sobering statistics, the article goes on to share remarkable research about the supporting role of dietary supplements in aging:

  • Alzheimer's patients with low levels of serum vitamin D score lower on metal state examinations compared to patients with adequate vitamin D
  • Studies indicate that calcium and vitamin D supplements, in combination, support bone density
  • A 2007 randomized, placebo controlled clinical intervention study among 325 postmenopausal women receiving 45mcg/day of vitamin K2 for three years found that hip-bone strength remained unchanged where the bone strength of those in the placebo group decreased significantly.
  • Epidemiological studies indicate that higher intakes of vitamins E, K and B12 as well as magnesium, copper, manganese and boron are associated with higher bone density
  • Fish oil (DHA in particular) continues to gain support as protective against dementia

The take away message here is that we can all make a decision, at any age, to age as well as possible. Our diet, lifestyle and supplementation choices can have a huge impact on our health and well-being throughout the aging process.

Omega-3 for Healthy Men

A recent study published in the British Journal of Nutrition explored the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on heart health in healthy subjects. Over 57,000 subjects were enrolled in the Danish Diet, Cancer and Health cohort study. During the follow-up of almost 8 years, over 1,000 of those subjects had developed acute coronary syndrome. The report concluded men with increased intakes of EPA and DHA had a decreased associated risk of acute coronary syndrome than compared to those with less EPA and DHA in their diet.

Male Sexual Performance: What You Should Know

What is good for heart health is also good for healthy sexual health.

Researchers now appreciate the physiologic connection between heart health and penile health. That connection may indeed be related to nitric oxide production, the way in which our body regulates vascular tone. Healthy nitric oxide production is needed for both general vascular health and for healthy penile circulation. Discover which supplements helps support healthy nitric oxide production.

Prime Time™ contains a specific combination of ingredients to promote healthy nitric oxide production, maintain normal levels of testosterone, and promote normal blood vessel dilation.

Gluten-Free Diet + Antioxidants!

According to a new report published in Clinical Biochemistry, those with celiac disease have a significantly reduced antioxidant capacity due to a reduction in levels of the antioxidant glutathione. The study found increased activities of antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase, in children with active and silent celiac disease, which shows higher levels of reactive oxygen species. The researchers were led to conclude “Consumption of an antioxidant-rich diet and appropriate dietary supplements may complement the normal gluten-free diet.” For more information, please click the link below.

Shifting America from Sick Care to Genuine Wellness

In a recent online op-ed piece, Senator Tom Harkin (D- Iowa), a senior member of the Senate Health, Education Labor and Pensions Committee and a key contributor to the healthcare reform bill stated,

“As the lead Senator in drafting the Prevention and Public Health section of the bill, I view this legislation as our opportunity to recreate America as a genuine wellness society- a society that is focused on prevention, good nutrition, fitness and public health. …We spend a staggering $2.3 trillion annually on health care-16.5% of our GDP and far more than any other country spends on health care- yet the World Health Organization ranks US Healthcare only 37th among nations, on par with Serbia… Currently in the US, 95% of every healthcare dollar is spent on treating illnesses and conditions after they occur. But we spend peanuts on prevention.”

New information on aging!

It appears that research is pointing to a relatively new factor which may play a part in accelerating the aging process. Advanced glycation end products (known by their very clever acronym, AGEs) bind tissues together by a process called "cross-linking" making tissues throughout the body deformed, inflexible and dysfunctional. A study in the Journal Glycobiology hypothesizes that the accumulation of AGEs plays a role in a number of conditions including diabetes, inflammation and neurodegeneration.

Stay tuned for more information on the latest science and how you can stay healthy and live well!

President Underscores Complementary Medicine, Prevention and Primary Care for US Healthcare Reform

President Obama expressed his openness to include complementary medicine in a U.S. healthcare system during an April 29 Town Hall meeting in Arnold, MO.

“We should do what works,” President Obama said. “I think it is pretty well documented through scientific studies that acupuncture, for example, can be very helpful in relieving certain things like migraines and other ailments—or at least as effective as more intrusive interventions….I think one basic principle that we know is that the more we do on the prevention side, the more we can obtain serious savings down the road."

In a more recent town hall meeting in Raleigh, NC on July 29th, the President also stressed the importance of primary care medicine and prevention. He stated to the audience that there must be specific incentives to encourage young doctors to practice primary care medicine. And reform must include reimbursement incentives for healthcare professionals based on positive outcomes as compared to the present system of rewarding numbers of procedures regardless of outcome.

Diet Alone May Be Insufficient According to ADA

Finally, one professional association is starting to get it …

What many of us have suspected for quite some time, the fact that the American diet is just not providing adequate nutritional intake, is finally being validated by national health agencies and professional associations.

For the first time, the American Dietetic Association (ADA), the most prestigious national professional association for Registered Dieticians, admits that diet alone may be insufficient to provide the nutrients for optimal health.

In an unprecedented position paper on Dietary Supplements, the ADA says

“Usual eating patterns of Americans suggest that our diets are frequently inadequate in terms of meeting dietary recommendations for promoting optimal health. Although it is the cornerstone of dietetic care, efforts to optimize health through improved dietary selections may not always be sufficient. In addition, for select nutrients, daily requirements may necessitate energy intake above recommended levels to control body weight or intake of food items not acceptable or tolerated by individuals. In these instances, dietary supplementation may be essential to ensure optimal health.”

So just how important is Omega-3?

A recent study concludes omega-3 deficiency is the sixth biggest killer of Americans! According to this study, omega-3 deficiency is more deadly than excess trans fat intake, causing 96,000 US deaths per year. Harvard researchers examined a variety of dietary, lifestyle and metabolic risk factors, one of which was omega-3 deficiency. A mathematical model was used to determine how many fatalities could have been prevented with various interventions. Because omega-3 deficiency is classified as a risk factor for death, it’s easy to see why supplementation with fish oil, a healthy diet and lifestyle are so incredibly beneficial.

Scientific Workshop Supports DRI for EPA+DHA.

In June 2008, the Technical Committee on Dietary Lipids of the International Life Sciences Institute North America sponsored a 2-day workshop to review research data on eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids for heart benefits, cancer, and cognitive decline. Previously in 2002, the Institute of Medicine concluded there was insufficient evidence available to define Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) for EPA and DHA. Since then, significant research data has emerged meriting a reassessment for DRI recommendations. The workshop concluded “consistent evidence from multiple research paradigms demonstrates a clear, inverse relationship between EPA+DHA intake and risk of fatal (and possibly nonfatal) coronary heart disease, providing evidence that supports a nutritionally achievable DRI for EPA+DHA between 250 and 500 mg/d.”

Researchers also note that evidence of beneficial effects of EPA+DHA for cognitive health is emerging. Epidemiological data suggests positive benefits from eating one fish meal per week on neurodegenerative diseases.

Gluten-free diet: good for Celiac Disease, bad for gut health.

A recent article published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that while a gluten-free diet is beneficial for patients suffering from food-related diseases such as Celiac Disease, it is detrimental to gut health and gut-related immune function. A gluten-free diet is often prescribed for patients with gluten-intolerance, wheat allergy or Celiac Disease to reduce the chance of an allergic reaction. This includes the exclusion of wheat, rye, barley, and oats from the diet. Gluten is a small protein composed of gliadin and glutenin that makes up roughly 80% of the protein content in wheat. In patients with Celiac Disease, exposure to gluten can result in an inappropriate immune response in the gastrointestinal tract, resulting in changes in enterocyte anatomy, poor absorption of critical nutrients and resultant systemic deficiencies, and other intestinal problems.

Researchers at the Microbial Ecophysiology and Nutrition Group in Valencia, Spain found that a gluten free diet resulted in a decrease in beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium longum and an increase in potentially pathogenic bacteria such as Enterobacteriaceae and Escherichia coli. They also found the ability of colonic bacteria to stimulate cytokine production (an immune response) was reduced in patients on a gluten-free diet.

Isotonix Might-A-Mins Spectrum Probiotics is a great way to supplement your digestive tract with beneficial bacteria that may be reduced while following a gluten-free diet. One capful of Isotonix Might-A-Mins Spectrum Probiotics contains more than 14 billion colony-forming units (CFUs) from 7 different probiotic strains.

Sugar and Your Genes

A recent Australian study reported in the Journal of Experimental Medicine may help explain, at least in part, why so many people are struggling with their weight today, and why weight problems tend to run in families.

Sam El-Osta, from the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, led the study which examined the impact of diet on human heart tissue and in mice. The researchers found that cells remember the effects of a single spike in sugar intake by temporarily switching off the genetic controls designed to protect the body against diabetes and disease.

"We now know that the chocolate bar you had this morning can have very acute effects, and those effects can continue for up to two weeks" said lead researcher Sam El-Osta, from the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, during an interview with the Australian Associated Press.

"These changes continue beyond the meal itself and have the ability to alter natural metabolic responses to diet. With chronic poor eating habits, this genetic damage may last months or years, and could potentially pass through bloodlines... to one's children"

I don't know about you, but I find this very interesting. The more we learn about the interplay of our genes and our diet through the new field of nutritional genomics, the closer we are to finding new approaches for health.

Curcumin: It’s Quality over Quantity

A six-month, placebo controlled, double-blind trial in humans found that taking 1 gram of Curcumin BCM-95™ results in much greater blood levels of curcuminoids than consuming 4 grams of curcumin with a meal. 940 ± 920 vs. 120 ± 140 nmol/L. These results indicate that the patented extraction process and formulation found in Curcumin BCM-95™ yields superior absorption and bioavailability compared to other curcumin extracts and powders. Researchers also found that it is the concentration of curcuminoids in the blood that is positively associated with cardiovascular health and not the total amount of curcumin ingested. Pre-Workout Meals: More Important Than You May Think

A new study published in the May 2009 Journal of Nutrition found that your pre-workout meal may be just as important as your workout . The study found the type of carbohydrates you eat before a workout may influence how much fat you burn during your exercise session. Women who ate a breakfast rich in low glycemic carbohydrates such as muesli, yogurt, skimmed milk -- burned 50 percent more fat during a post-breakfast workout than those who ate a breakfast rich in high glycemic carbohydrates such as cornflakes and white bread. So make your pre-workout meal work as hard as you do.

Fact or Fiction, Does eating breakfast really help you lose weight?

Is all the hype about eating breakfast really true? The answer is yes, but specifically a Low-Glycemic breakfast (Low-Glycemic meaning it has a minimal effect on blood sugar levels and has a glycemic index of 55 or less). An article posted in Medpage Today explained the results of a study conducted showing how a low-glycemic index breakfast enhanced the fat burning effects of moderate exercise in sedentary women. It showed that fat oxidation increased significantly during a 60-minute walk when the women consumed low glycemic-index carbohydrates for breakfast.

Some low-glycemic breakfast ideas would be:

museli, apple juice, an apple, canned peaches, skim milk and yogurt (breakfast used in study)

egg white omelet with spinach, mushrooms, and feta

All Bran cereal with a banana

Whole wheat - high fiber toast with peanut butter and blueberries with skim milk

Multivitamin for Longevity

In a recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers found that regular multivitamin use resulted in longer telomeres in women. What are telomeres? Telomeres are a repeating nucleotide sequence at the end of our chromosomes that protects them from degradation. The length of telomeres decreases with every cell division and if too short, can lead to the loss of cellular function and apoptosis (programmed cell death). Evidence suggests that inflammation and oxidative stress can contribute to shorter telomeres. This study found that compared to nonusers, regular multivitamin use was associated with 5.1% longer telomeres on average. This difference corresponds to approximately 9.8 years of age-related telomere loss. The study also found that these results were greatest in users who took a combination multivitamin and antioxidant.

Prenatal Vitamins- A Nutritional Insurance Policy for All Women, Not Just For Expecting Mothers

Did you know that the U.S. Public Health Service and the March of Dimes Foundation recommend that all women of childbearing age get a minimum of 400 micrograms of folic acid each day?

With today's fast-paced diets, most women do not get all the nutrition their bodies need from their diet alone. It is a smart idea to start taking a good prenatal vitamin whenever there is a chance that you may become pregnant. The main reason is because of the ingredient folic acid. Folic acid is extremely important to help prevent birth defects. Neural tube defects develop in the first 28 days after conception, which is before many women realize they are pregnant. And, since about half of all pregnancies are unplanned, taking a prenatal vitamin before you become pregnant is a great nutritional insurance policy for your future baby's health.

Calm and focused!

After a long and stressful day last week, I decided to take a capful of nutraMetrix Isotonix® L-Tryptophan before heading home for the day. I had never taken it during the day before; I had only used it before bed to help me fall asleep. I was a little nervous that it might make me tired but I decided to risk it. After about 15 minutes, I started to feel calm and in control. My mind felt clear and I was able to focus on what I needed to accomplish for the rest of the day. I didn't get a huge burst of energy but I also did not feel tired or lethargic any longer. nutraMetrix Isotonix L-Tryptophan really helped give me a feeling of calm and control and soothed my nerves.

I'm really glad to know that nutraMetrix Isotonix L-Tryptophan helps me during the day and at night! Have you tried it yet? To learn more about nutraMetrix Isotonix L-Tryptophan or to buy yours today, click here!
